UNPACKAGED

Posted January 25, 2010 @ 2:04pm | by reDesign

With packaging accounting for approximately 30% of landfill waste, big retailers like Wal-Mart are making news by taking aim at their suppliers – forcing them to compete with reduced and responsible packaging. But is that going far enough? How necessary is packaging, at least new packaging, anyway? Here’s one London-based retailer that’s changing the way we think about buying, and packaging. Unpackaged was founded on the notion that unnecessary packaging contributes to cost and pollution, and wastes valuable resources. They encourage customers to consider four simple actions:

Reduce by only buying what you need

Reuse by bringing your containers for a refill

Recycle what you can’t reuse

And… if you can’t reuse or recycle it then don’t buy it!
