Apple's Visual Storytelling

As a graphic designer, I tend to look at Apple with a bit of reverence since I and most of my colleagues are users. Every once in a while, as a sustainable minded designer, I try to take a critical look at the products I use. Often realizing that some of my own choices are leading to environmental damage, but not being ready to give up - say, using my computer - I try to see what these companies doing to be less of a problem or pressure them to do so. I was surprised the other day to discover that Apple has offered up some very interesting visuals and information on Life Cycle Impact. They now have provided calculations on their environmental footprint. This is not entirely a surprise, Apple has both been pressured by it users, who seem to care about these things, and by outside groups like Greenpeace to do more to clean up their products and process. Some of this has come through realization that better design is part of the solution. The other way is communicating in a clear and transparent manner the environmental impact that they and users like myself create through their existence. This is important because only then do we have a marker to set goals against for a better product of tomorrow. Way to go Apple.
